Marine Naturalist Crash Course (3-hr)

Date(s): This is a recurring course, offered on varying days that you can select from at checkout. Time: 5:00 PM- 8:00 PM Location: 2525 Industrial Blvd, Suite C4, Juneau, AK. 99801 This 3-hour course provides mariners an orientation into Juneau's natural world. Ideal for both tourism professional and recreational enthusiasts, this classroom-based workshop will focus on ecosystems found within Southeast Alaska's Inside Passage and Outer Coastlines. Taught by local researchers and veteran outdoor guides, you will walk away with a greater understanding of Alaska's natural history, in topics such as: -Wildlife, and wildlife viewing areas -Wildlife viewing etiquette -Marine ecosystems and responsible stewardship -Contemporary and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) -Geology -Glacial and tidal effects -Weather and regional climates -Waterway maps and place names -Harvest fisheries and harvest trends -Fisheries management overview -Enforcement/ regulatory agencies -Responding to environmental and wildlife emergencies -Citizen science programs -and more! This course is a great way to launch into tourism industries such as whale watching, sport fish guiding, wildlife viewing, etc. Even local Alaskans will walk away with new factoids! Our instructors and guest speakers are veterans of interpretive guiding, offering participants the opportunity to establish a guiding narrative, and bolster their ecological understanding.
