Beginner Sport Fishing Workshop

Service Description

Date: March 28th, 2026 Time: 12:00 PM- 6:00 PM Location: SABER Training Center (2525 Industrial Blvd, Suite C4, Juneau, AK. 99821) Led by veterans from Juneau's charter sportfishing industry, this course is designed for beginners and new charter crewmembers to learn basic fishing skills for select fish species. Instructors will demonstrate**: -Common baits and lures, by species -Common areas and depths to target select species -Catch and release techniques (to include deep-sea release) -Netting a catch -Weights and Measurement of catch -Crab escapement setups -Safe handling and storage of fish -Licensing requirements and application -ADFG logging of catch -General fishing deck safety and common accidents -Boating laws specific to vessels engaged in fishing Additionally, the course includes a detailed overview the state and federal requirements for sportfish harvesting. Students will receive an ecological status overview for Zone 11A (Juneau's subsistence waterways), along with instruction for how to reference and interpret state and federal laws, emergency closures, openings, and licensing processes from an Alaska Department of Fish and Game's 'Alaska Angler' curriculum. Species detailed in course: -(Salmonidae): 5 species of Pacific salmon, Trout/Steelhead, & Dolly Vardan -(Cods): Pacific/ Black Cod -(Flatfish): Pacific Halibut, Yellowfin Sole. -(Rockfish): Yelloweye Rockfish (red snapper), Black Rockfish. -(Greenlings): Lingcod, Atka Mackerel. -(Shellfish): King Crab, Tanner Crab, Dungeness Crab, Spot Prawn, Side-Stripe Shrimp Students will be afforded the opportunity to practice with fishing gear (downriggers, electric pot puller), and view demonstrations of how to set fishing reels, rods, and lines. Experienced anglers will be present to share line-tying techniques/ knots, and leader splicing.
