
Cold Water Survival + Craft Night
Learn about cold-water survival and then build your own PVC drybag or rain jacket from a life raft
Service Description
This survival workshop teaches you how to respond to cold water emergencies such as: -Person Overboard (POB) -Near Drowning -Cold Water Immersion -Hypothermia -Abandon Ship -Ice Rescue -Use of Cold Water Immersion Suits Students will learn skills to survive cold water environments, and safely assist other mariners during cold-water emergencies. In addition, students will learn how to maintain, deploy, enter, and survive in a non-SOLAS life raft and cold water immersion suit. The following Saturday, you will be provided the tools, knowledge, and crafter's assistance in creating your very own drybag (or rain jacket) from the PVC materials salvaged from your recently deployed training life raft. This workshop is physically involved, requiring participants to enter cold ocean water (Statter Harbor, Auke Bay), lift and carry 40 lbs, jump from moderate heights into water, and team-style physical contact with other participants. Registrants will receive additional details by email to include: gear requirements, food options, recommended clothing, etc. Training includes (11) hours of classroom training, and (2) hours of water-based field training. Day 1 (February 28th, 2026): 9:00 AM-1:00 PM Classroom Training: Thermodynamics, Life rafts, Immersion Suits, Cold Water Immersion and Survival techniques, 1:00 PM- 2:00 PM: LUNCH 2:00 PM- 4:00 PM Life raft deployment drills. Participants will enter the water in immersion suits, demonstrate warming and rescue positions, enter the life raft, and practice inverting a life raft. Day 2 (Following Saturday, March 7th): -3:00PM- 6:00 PM @ Classroom Training: Cold water dynamics, Ditching a vessel, Person Overboard Search and Rescue, Environmental Injury First Aid (Hypothermia, Frostbite, Cardiac Arrest) -6:00 PM- 9:00 PM @ SABER Classroom: Dry bag crafting/ construction and dinner (all materials and food are provided).

Cancellation Policy
Cancellations must be made prior to 24-hours of SABER class start times. Missed classes;students arriving later than 15-minutes of scheduled start-time; or cancellations within 24-hours of scheduled classes will incur a $25 cancellation fee.
